Listen to the Word

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.    (Matthew 11:28-29)

Jesus makes a remarkable promise in our Scripture: “I will give you rest.” Then he repeats the promise a few seconds later when he says, “You will find rest for your souls.”

Jesus offers just what we need: a chance to slow down, de-stress, and take a break. He offers relief. He gives us the opportunity to let go of our heavy, wearying burden, and to exchange it for his burden, his yoke, which he says is easy and light. Sometimes we worry that if we really give ourselves to Christ, it will be just one more big thing on our plate, one more responsibility to mess up, one more heavy burden to bear. But Jesus says he will give us rest.
