Listen to the Word

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 10:39)

Today’s verse contains a paradox: we can only experience the life we long for if we stop pursuing it.

A meaningful life is not something you can achieve by seeking a meaningful life. If you make it your goal to achieve satisfaction, contentment, and happiness for yourself, you will fail. You will lose all those things you are striving to grab hold of. The very selfishness of the quest for a life like you want it will shrivel your soul to the point that you can’t experience true blessing and joy.

However, if you forget about your own happiness and live for the sake of Christ, you’ll receive a meaningful life for yourself thrown in as an added bonus. If you run after a meaningful life, you won’t catch it. If you run after Jesus, you’ll get Jesus plus a meaningful life.

The kind of rich life you long for is a byproduct of following Jesus.

Live the Word

Ask Jesus to help you stop pursuing fulfillment apart from him.
