Listen to the Word

Whoever has ears, let them hear. (Matthew 11:15)

Jesus used the phrase in today’s Scripture more than once following some important teaching. It was a relatively polite way for him to say, “Hey, you, I’m talking to you! Are you paying attention?” Jesus knows that we sometimes filter his words instead of hearing them – we screen out the parts we don’t find appealing and internalize only the comfortable parts. And Jesus knows that we sometimes deflect his words instead of hearing them – we think of other people we know who need his rebuke instead of recognizing that he is speaking to us.

Living as a disciple of Jesus often starts with our ears. We must realize that he is speaking directly to us, and we must be ready to listen.
