Listen to the Word

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

Notice two things in today’s verse: notice who Jesus calls, and notice what he calls us to do.

The call of Jesus does not come to the perfect and put together. He doesn’t say, “Come to me, all who have it made.” He invites those of us who are struggling to make it. He invites you, with your overflowing to-do list, your gnawed fingernails, your looming deadlines, and your personalized set of headaches.

He calls us to come to HIM. The key to handling your stressed-out life is not to come to bed, or to come to vacation, or to come to a time management class, or to come to retirement. The key is not to come to religion, or to church, or to the Bible. Jesus says, “Come to ME.” Only he can provide true rest. Rest and relief are gifts at the disposal of Jesus. He calls you not only to give him your heart, but to give him your burdens and your baggage. Bring it all to him, and he will give you rest.

Live the Word

Write out today’s Scripture and post it somewhere prominent. Read it again each time you feel tired or anxious.
