Listen to the Word
The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. (Matthew 15:31)
Eight times in his Gospel, Matthew uses the word “amazed” to describe the reaction of people to Jesus. They were amazed by his words, saying “wow” in response to his wisdom and his teaching. They were amazed by his miracles; not everyone has the ability to tell a stormy sea to simmer down or to send demons packing. In today’s Scripture, the amazement stems from hearing soliloquys come from mouths that had been stopped, watching broken bodies start to breakdance, and seeing blind eyes behold their first bursts of color and light.
Jesus can do things nobody else can do. If we aren’t amazed, we aren’t paying attention.
Live the Word
Think of two amazing things Jesus has done and praise him for them. Think of one example from the pages of Scripture, and one from your personal experience with him.
