Listen to the Word

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  (Matthew 6:28-29)

Jesus tells us that worry is completely unnecessary because our Creator cares for his creatures. He challenges us to pay attention to creation. Notice that the flowers don’t toil or spin. They don’t get stressed out about the high prices and low selection at the mall. And they are clothed very well – God provides abundantly for them. Even Hollywood royalty decked out for the red carpet can’t compete with a simple wildflower. In the same conversation Jesus urges us to notice the birds – they don’t get uptight about planting and reaping and storing (and I’ve never heard about a bird with a migraine or an ulcer). The birds just assume God will feed them, and he does.

Jesus’ point is that we don’t need to worry. If God cares enough to provide for birds and flowers, he will certainly care for us. We are in good hands. Worry is not necessary.

Live the Word

Take a look out the nearest window. Spend a moment observing the slice of creation that you can see, and ponder the great job God does taking care of it. Ask him to assure you that you can trust him to care for you, too.
