Listen to the Word
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. (Psalm 139:23)
Psalm 139 points us to another daring prayer: “Search me.” In this Psalm, David invites God to do a thorough examination of his soul – to turn over every rock, check every closet, and look in every corner. This is obviously not something to pray casually. For one thing, you know that there are some parts of your soul that are downright unpresentable – attitudes and habits that you have worked really hard to keep hidden. For another thing, you know that God’s penetrating gaze won’t miss a thing.
Do you trust his mercy enough to ask him to explore all your junk? Do you desire his healing enough to allow him to do a thorough exam, diagnosing every single injury and illness that requires his attention?
Live the Word
As often as possible today, pray the brief prayer, “Search me, O God.”
