Listen to the Word

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.   (Isaiah 64:8)

Isaiah gives a helpful description of your relationship to God – he is the potter, and you are the clay. That analogy points us to another daring prayer we can pray: “Mold me.”

There are a couple of reasons that this prayer is difficult to pray. First of all, being molded isn’t always pleasant. The potter applies pressure to the clay. It might be easier to just remain a lump of clay on the table. But then of course you’ll never know the joy of becoming something beautiful and useful.

The second reason this prayer is difficult is that we don’t get to decide our final shape. The potter gets to decide what the clay will become. The clay doesn’t get to say, “My preference is to be formed into an elegant vase, and I’d like to be painted red.” The clay doesn’t even get a vote. Do you trust God enough to let him determine what he will make of you?

Live the Word

As often as possible today, pray the brief prayer, “Lord, mold me.”
