Listen to the Word

All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. (Isaiah 44:9)

The idol of money is another tempting and dangerous God substitute. We even call it “the almighty dollar,” a label that points to our dangerous tendency to worship the stuff. We expect that money will make us happy, secure our futures, and supply our needs.

An interesting comparison for you: a Kleenex is one form of paper. A dollar bill is another form of paper. You blow your nose on the first one. You bow down to the second one, and spend all your energy to acquire it, and build your life around it. Does this make much sense to you? Money is a lousy stand-in for the real God.

Live the Word

Ask God to help you see money as he intends for you to see it – as a gift from him and a resource to use to serve him, not as a replacement for him.
