Listen to the Word

All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. (Isaiah 44:9)

The idol of the top of the ladder is another major temptation for us. We expect to find satisfaction in success. We assume that if we can score the big promotion, or hit the honor roll, or make the all-star team, then we will be fulfilled. This is an especially dangerous idol for followers of Jesus. He taught us that the key to real success is to become the biggest servant, not the biggest hotshot.

Achievement is a lousy God substitute. It will not fill the emptiness inside you. Only the real God can do that.

Live the Word

Find a small act of service that you can perform today, and do it without letting anyone else know.
