Listen to the Word

Therefore I tell you, do not worry…  (Matthew 6:25)

We will spend the next two weeks exploring some Biblical teaching about worry. Today’s Scripture commands us not to worry – and it may as well order us not to breathe. Worry is our favorite spiritual discipline! It is hard to imagine a life free from worry. We are anxietyaholics.

But worry is a spiritual sickness. Worry indicates that we think it is up to us to care for ourselves, provide for ourselves, and hold the universe together. It reveals that we lack confidence in God’s competence – that we aren’t certain that he can be trusted. Worry is the opposite of faith. It is impossible to trust God and worry at the same time – it would be like being simultaneously hot and cold. We can’t be both fretful and faithful. The bottom line is that we either trust God or we worry.

Live the Word

Confess to God your tendency to worry. Ask him to help you trust more and worry less today.
