Listen to the Word
For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:17-18)
Because Jesus put on skin and entered our world, he knows what we are going through. He knows what it is like to be tempted. He knows that tug of war in the heart between giving in and standing strong. He knows what it is like to have a friend turn on you, and you would like to grab them by the throat and shake them. He knows what it is like to have needy people hanging on you, and a big part of you would love to turn away. He knows what it is like when the way of God is very clear, but it is also very hard and costly, and you have a strong desire to bail.
Because he has been there, he can help. The next time you get ambushed by a temptation to be selfish, or mean, or lazy, or lustful, or whiny, hear Jesus say, “I’ve been there. It’s tough, isn’t it? But I conquered that temptation. You can, too.”
Live the Word
What is your most threatening temptation today? Ask Jesus to help you handle it with his strength.
