Listen to the Word
I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. (Revelation 1:18)

I love the verb tense Jesus uses when speaking of being dead: “I was dead.” As in, past tense. As in, I used to be, but I’m not any more. Wow! Generally speaking, dead people tend to stay that way. Death is a permanent state. Once you are dead, you continue to be dead. For most people, the sequence goes like this: I was alive, but now I am and will continue to be dead.

But not Jesus! Jesus says he was dead, but now he is and will continue to be alive. He is the Living One! He took death’s best shot, and now He is forever fully alive.
