Listen to the Word
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. (Matthew 6:1)
Today’s verse raises a fundamental question for you to ponder: Whose approval do you prefer? Would you rather hear PEOPLE say, “Wow! What a strong Christian! What a prayer warrior! What a hero!” Or would you rather hear GOD say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” If you are looking for attention and applause from people, you can achieve that. If you are looking for God’s approval, you can have that. The key is to be the kind of person who would rather please God than people - the kind of person who prefers the rewards God gives to the rewards that people give. If you live for your Father in heaven, you’ll have no trouble living without human applause.
We must avoid spiritual showoff syndrome. Discipleship should be a reality, not a performance. Jesus calls you to live for an audience of One.
Live the Word
Do a kind deed for someone today, and do your best to make sure they don’t find out that you are the one who did it.
