Listen to the Word
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12)
Numbering our days reminds us of our need for the eternal God. When we come face to face with the temporary nature of our life on earth, we yearn for something that will last. We need something constant, enduring, eternal.
I went snorkeling a few summers back, and I caught a hermit crab. I removed my mask and used it as a small bucket to transport the crab back to shore. The whole way back to shore, the crab was striving to get out of the mask. It was as if he realized he was made for more than that tiny space, and he was longing for the vastness of the ocean. We are not so different from that crab. As we ponder the brevity of our lives, something awakens in us that says, “Surely I was made for more than this.” We long for eternity.
Our days on earth are limited. But if we connect with the everlasting God, we can receive everlasting life.
Live the Word
Ask God to help you live today in light of the fact that you were designed to live with him forever. Ask him to help you focus on things that will last.
