Listen to the Word
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”-which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
(Mark 15:34)
Even Jesus knows what it is like to experience the sense of abandonment by God. When he was on the cross, the excruciating words of Psalm 22:1 were on his lips. Jesus, who knew the joy of unbroken communion with God throughout his life, experienced the agony of God’s absence.
Because Jesus suffered God-forsakenness for us, we will never be ultimately separated from God. God may appear to be far off at times, but he promises never to leave us or forsake us. On the cross, Jesus conquered everything that could possibly separate us from God. On the cross, God showed how far he was willing to go to assure you of his unfailing love.
Live the Word
Read Romans 8:31-39. Reflect on the amazing truth it proclaims: Christ’s death guarantees us that nothing can separate us from God’s love.
