Listen to the Word

Love… is not self-seeking. (1 Corinthians 13:5)

1 Corinthians 13 gives us several descriptions of God’s kind of love. One of those descriptions comes close to summing up the entire chapter: love is not self-seeking.

Our nature is to look out for number one. “What’s in it for me?” seems to be the most important question. We seek our own happiness, our own pleasure, our own fulfillment. But love asks us to put the needs of others above our own. The New Testament word for love is agape. Agape is a self-giving love, a sacrificial love. It is a radical choice to seek what is good for others instead of obsessing about what is good for you. Love is not self-seeking.

Live the Word

Write the words “others first” somewhere prominent, and let those words remind you not to be self-seeking this week.
