Listen to the Word
Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
The writer of Ecclesiastes concludes his quest for meaningful life with the realization that keeping God's commandments is crucial. We must follow God's instructions, and do what he says. This is not the path to happiness that most people try. We prefer the "I'll do what I want" approach. But going God's way works out better.
Imagine a family on a trip to Disney World. They stop for fuel just before entering the park, and their kids become entranced with the cheap items on the gas station toy aisle. They beg their parents to let them stay all day and play with those toys. They say they really really REALLY want to play with those toys. But their wise parents assure the kids that if they will do what the parents ask and get back in the car, they will be really glad they did. Mom and dad's plans for the Magic Kingdom will blow those piddly toys out of the water.
God knows what is best for us, so things always work out better when we do what he wants.
Live the Word
Think of a small step of obedience to God that you can take today. As you take that step, ask God to demonstrate to you that going his way is best.
