Listen to the Word
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)
It is appropriate to fear electricity. That doesn’t mean that we should avoid it, or that it is out to get us. But we should realize that it is powerful and we can get hurt if we play around with it. We shouldn’t put our fingers in a socket or climb a pole and swing on a live wire.
Likewise, we should have a healthy respect for God. We shouldn’t take him lightly. In fact, today’s Scripture says that wisdom starts with fearing him. To be wise requires being right about the important things. God is the most important thing. If we don’t fear him – if we think he’s not a big deal or not someone with whom we should concern ourselves – then we are being foolish about the central reality of the universe. The first step toward being wise is to nurture a healthy awe toward God.
Live the Word
If you are physically able, kneel the next time you pray. Let that humble posture remind you that God is bigger than you can fathom.
