Listen to the Word
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29)
Our Scripture warns you that unwholesome talk will try to sneak out of your mouth. It is your job to prevent it from exiting. God calls you to set up a security checkpoint at your lips. He wants you to do a thorough examination of each word before it is said. If there are words that would wound, they don’t get clearance to pass. If there are words that are dishonest, they have to stay behind. Anything that is unwholesome is unwelcome beyond the gate of your lips.
Much of your problem with words stems from the absence of this kind of security checkpoint. Any words that pop into your mind pop out of your mouth. Instead of practicing that kind of unfiltered communication, you must evaluate each word before you speak it. If the words you are considering don’t honor God, then don’t let them out of your mouth.
Live the Word
Be intentional about thinking before you speak today. When unwholesome words present themselves at your lips, choose to leave them unspoken.
