Listen to the Word
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. (Hebrews 1:1-3a)
Our Scripture says that Jesus is the one through whom God has spoken to us.
The Bible makes it clear that God is a talker. He creates by speaking. He continually pleads with people, woos them, commands them, and calls them. Christ is God’s climactic communication to humanity. God has always been revealing bits and pieces of himself here and there, through a variety of channels – “at many times and in various ways,” as our Scripture says. And that is wonderful. But now he has done something even better. In Jesus, God speaks ultimately and finally. No longer a little here and a little there.
God whispers through nature and through other believers. He speaks through Scripture. In Christ, he gives a clear shout. When God wanted to send the most comprehensible, compelling, complete message describing himself, he didn’t send a book, a text message, or a Hallmark card. He didn’t send another prophet or preacher. He sent his Son.
Live the Word
Ask God to speak to you today. Then as you go through the day, be open to the possibility that his voice may come to you through what your read, hear, and experience.
