Listen to the Word
If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. (Daniel 3:17-18)
The most striking phrase in this week’s Scripture is “even if he does not.” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego have complete confidence in God. They know that God is both able and willing to save them. But they boldly state that they will willingly follow him even if he decides not to save them. They say, “If God chooses to rescue us, we will go his way. If God chooses to let us burn to death, we will go his way.” These three young men have no illusion that their faith in God guarantees them freedom from suffering. They know that suffering and death are possible, but they choose to remain loyal to God anyway.
