Listen to the Word

The LORD God Almighty, the LORD is his name. (Hosea 12:5)

When you receive a piece of mail addressed to “Occupant,” you probably don’t get all that excited about opening it. You know the sender of the mail doesn’t really know you – you are just part of a mass mailing that is probably trying to get you to spend money on something you don’t really need. But when you see an envelope in the mailbox with your name handwritten on it, I bet you feel a sense of anticipation. That piece of mail obviously came from someone who knows you. It is a big deal when someone calls you by name.

God doesn’t want to be a generic, nameless deity to you. He wants your prayers to be personal communication with him, not just spiritual junk mail spewed out to anyone who will listen. He wants you to know him. He wants you to call him by name.

As you pray today, call God “Yahweh,” the name he reveals to us in Scripture.
