Listen to the Word
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. (John 4:23)
God seeks those who worship in spirit and in truth. We have a tendency to miss one or the other of those characteristics of true worship. Some Christians pride themselves on spirited worship. They have tons of passion and emotion, and they are so excited for God that you might find them swinging from the chandelier, but they may have little concern for the mind, for truth. Everything tends to be about trying to engineer a feeling.
Other Christians consider themselves zealous for truth. They are proud of their doctrinal correctness, and they overflow with information about God. But when it comes to worship, they are never so moved that they actually move. They would never fall down in awe of God’s holiness like Isaiah did, or dance for joy at God’s generosity like David did.
God wants you to worship him with heart and head, in spirit and in truth.
Live the Word
Which element, heart or head, tends to come less naturally for you in your worship? Ask God to deepen that side of your worship. Ask him to help you to think deeply and to feel deeply.
